5-HTP and tryptophan
5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (5-HTP) is a direct precursor in the biosynthesis of 5-hydroxy-tryptamine or simply serotonin (popularly referred to as the "happiness hormone") from the essential amino acid L-tryptophan. According to research (RCTS), the use of the amino acid tryptophan, and even better 5-HTP, can boost serotonin neurotransmission and cause therapeutically important effects on human behavior.

The use of L-tryptophan as a dietary Supplement was discontinued in 1989 due to an outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome, which was caused by contaminated synthetic L-tryptophan from a single manufacturer. 5-HTP has since become a popular dietary Supplement in place of l-tryptophan removed from the market. In contrast to the latter, 5-HTP has not shown any toxicity over the past decades, which is due, among other things, to the use of a natural Griffonia extract containing 5-HTP as an active component, rather than a synthetic form. To combat the symptoms of depression, there are special medications-antidepressants. But, the use of drugs is carried out on the doctor's prescription, when there is a certain pathological condition. In the context of our reasoning, 5-HTP deserves special attention not only because it is an antidepressant, but also because of its proven ability to suppress appetite. A similar effect was identified in the second half of the 1980s. For example, in studies involving overweight women who were allowed to eat without restrictions, it was found that regular intake of 5-HTP caused a significant reduction in the amount of food consumed during the day and a reduction in body weight. This was due to the fact that the taste of women changed and saturation was achieved more quickly, approximately as it happens with anorexia. The study of these processes from the point of view of the influence on them of various activity of certain areas of the cortex revealed a change in the reaction to the food shown to the subjects – mainly carbohydrate, protein or fat. In particular, the number of signals corresponding to the desire to eat protein foods increased, and the number of signals indicating sympathy for carbohydrate foods decreased. This change affected the eating behavior of the subjects, forcing them to choose protein foods rather than carbohydrates. The practical significance of this effect is associated with the dosage of 5-HTP 8 mg/kg of body weight per day. The daily dosage is divided into several portions and taken several times a day before meals. For example, for a person weighing 60 kg, the dosage for 1 day will be 480 mg. This amount is easily distributed between three doses: 200, 200 and 100 mg, respectively. You must take the Supplement for one and a half months.

A large contribution to the possible development of depression is the lack of acetyl-L-carnitine, which indicates a violation of the regulation of transport of fatty acids through the inner membrane of cellular mitochondria.
