The less soda you drink, the stronger your bones are

Soft drinks affect bone health. This means that the more often you drink soda, the more likely you are to get a fracture. This is the conclusion reached by Chinese epidemiologists from Chongqing medical University in a study recently published in the journal Nutrients.

Study of the relationship between the frequency of fractures and drink consumption
Researchers followed 10,369 Chinese people aged 20-75 for five years. Of these, 9,914 had never had a broken bone at the start of the study. The researchers determined the diet and lifestyle of these 9914 study participants, and then determined which participants received a bone fracture during the study period.

Results of research on the influence of carbonated beverages on human health
The more often the study participants consumed soft drinks, the higher the likelihood of their fractures. Participants who consumed non-alcoholic carbonated beverages almost daily were almost 5 times more likely to have a broken bone than those who never drank non-alcoholic beverages.

Mechanism of influence of soda on the strength of bone tissue
Researchers suggest that soft drinks affect bone health because they contain phosphates. If the kidneys remove phosphates from the body, they produce less of the active form of vitamin D. Another possibility is that the fast-digesting sugars in soft drinks damage bone cells.

Another suggested reason is that people who drink a lot of soft drinks use less of other liquid foods that improve bone health, such as tea. Many studies confirm the benefits for bone health from regular consumption of black and special green tea.

In the past Western epidemiologists were faced with the Association between bone fractures and consumption of soft drinks. [J Bone Miner Res. 2003;18 (9): 1563-9. [Am J Clin Nutr. 2014;100(3):953-8.]

However, these associations were less strong than in the Chinese study. Probably, the researchers note, this is because the calcium intake in the Chinese group studied was extremely low-below 400 milligrams per day. This makes participants in the Chinese study more vulnerable to bone fractures.

Conclusion: the higher the consumption of soft drinks, the higher the risk of fractures
"High consumption of soft drinks is associated with a risk of fractures," the researchers write. "Daily consumption of soft drinks was associated with a doubled risk of fracture, regardless of socio-demographic factors and overall nutritional structure. This study highlights the important role of soft drinks in adult fracture risk. To increase or maintain bone mass and reduce the risk of fractures, public health and clinical interventions should consider reducing the consumption of soft drinks as an important strategy for individuals and the population."
